Insulating a Raleigh Crawl Space: Floor Batts or Foundation Walls

Batts drooping onto the dirt are one of the most common sights in a Raleigh crawl space. Where the insulation belongs depends on whether the space stays vented or gets sealed.

Fixr's 2025 guide puts crawl space insulation at $500–$6,000, about $2,000 for spray foam in an 800 sq ft crawl space. Installed per square foot: fiberglass batts $1–$2, rigid foam board $1–$4, spray foam $2–$5. In a vented crawl space the insulation sits under the floor; in a sealed one it often moves to the walls.

Why do floor batts fail in Raleigh crawl spaces?

Fiberglass between the floor joists sits right where humid summer air meets the cool underside of an air-conditioned house. With July dew points near 69°F at Raleigh-Durham International Airport (NOAA hourly normals), the batts soak up moisture, get heavy and pull away from the subfloor. Once there is a gap, they stop doing much, and wet insulation pressed against wood keeps that wood damp.

Vented crawl space or sealed crawl space

In a vented crawl space the floor above is the boundary between inside and outside, so the insulation belongs in the floor, held tight against the subfloor with supports. In a closed crawl space the boundary moves to the foundation walls, and insulation is often placed there instead. The energy chapter of the North Carolina Residential Code covers both: floors over crawl spaces and, as an alternative in a closed crawl space, the crawl space walls (Section N1102.2.11).

Foam on foundation walls comes with termite details of its own. The NC Office of State Fire Marshal points to the code's illustrations of inspection and treatment gaps at the bottom of foam plastic, so ask how the installer handles them.

Which crawl space insulation material should you choose?

  • Fiberglass batts are usually the cheapest per square foot but tolerate damp the least.
  • Rigid foam board on the walls shrugs off moisture and leaves the floor framing open to view.
  • Spray foam seals gaps as it insulates, at the highest price per foot.

Questions for the installer

  • Is the crawl space staying vented, or being sealed? The answer decides where the insulation goes.
  • What happens to the old batts?
  • How will termite inspection gaps be kept clear?
  • Is the insulation priced separately from the liner and drying equipment?

Questions homeowners ask

Should the old floor batts come out when the crawl space is sealed?

Often, yes, especially if they are wet, moldy or falling. Once the walls become the insulated boundary, damp batts in the floor add nothing and can hide rot. Ask the specialist to explain the plan for them in the written price.
